PTA association meeting tomorrow night at 7pm in the auditorium. PLEASE come to discuss important info about the upcoming spring festival.

Elections are just around the corner. How can you help the PTA?

On Wednesday…..
A letter went home today about the special guests that are coming to Germain on Wednesday March 21 asking parents to help by bringing in a food dish from their cultural background.
The PTA has been asked to decorate the auditorium on Wednesday for the luncheon in the multi-cultural theme. If you have any items in your home that you think fits the theme, please bring it into the parent center tomorrow. Flags, posters, decorations, anything!!! If you can help decorate and stay during the luncheon please let us know. Email Ronit ronit@secondwave.com
Spreed the word and let’s see how many multi-cultural items we can get to help make the auditorium look fabulous!!!

Yearbook News: Attention parents…..WE NEED YOUR PHOTOS. Keep taking photos of your student and activities. Send us your photos from the assemblies, field trips, or class parties. Please email high quality photos to ronit@secondwave.com with Germain Photos in the subject.

Pre-order with FREE happy ads are complete! Thank you to all those who turned in your orders and happy ads!
Orders will still be accepted. The cost is $23 with no more happy ads accepted. Please turn in orders to your teachers or to the office. Please make checks payable to Germain PTA with your child’s name and room # in the memo line. Order forms are in the office.

Upcoming Events:
Science Night – Volunteers are needed for our March 16 Science Night. The more volunteers = the more tables we can have. If you are interested please email us. ronit@secondwave.com with Science Night in the subject.

Spring Festival – Room parents start planing your auction baskets for our annual Spring Festival on April 20. Ticket and wristband pre-sales will begin soon. Please contact Michelle with any Spring Festival questions: luv_my_kidz@hotmail.com with Spring Festival in the subject.

Thank you to all the parents who came to our PTA association meeting last Tuesday. These meetings are a way to connect with other parents and go over important info about our school, our students, and how we can make our school a wonderful community!!!!

Important info from the PTA…..

- The teachers have voted… with a 96% YES vote the move to apply for Affiliate Charter has begun. What does this mean to you as parents and to your kids? Good question. Lots of info will be shared at the next PTA Association meeting on February 21 at 7pm.

- Volunteers Needed: The first PTA Science Night is in the works. WE NEED more volunteers that night. PLEASE, PLEASE email us if you can help. We need adults to oversee experiments otherwise we cannot have them. Please email Ronit Fischbach (ronit@secondwave.com) if you can help volunteer on March 16. THANK YOU!

- Thank you to all the families who came to our Valentine’s Dance on February 10. The DJ: Mobile Music who donated their services did a wonderful job. The kids had a great time dancing the night away. The delicious cookies came from San Carlo Deli, and Ralph’s bakeries.

PTA School news update…..

As many of you have heard, last Friday was a great victory for Germain. We showed LAUSD that the parents of Germain are united, strong, and we are here to advocate for our children. This week the school staff is discussing the possibility of applying to be a AFFILIATED CHARTER SCHOOL for the next school year. It is a great opportunity and it’s also a great undertaking as the application is due on March 15. PLEASE, PLEASE do a little research and speak to your teachers. This change will give our teachers and parents more control of our school, curriculum, and separates us from LAUSD. Not like a full Charter, but half way. We get a lot of the great benefits and teachers keep their benefits. Teachers need to know that the parents are here to support them. Show your support by wearing your school shirt on Tuesday. Take a few minutes to say thank you to a teachers…. yours or not, and ask how you can help!!!!

This is our moment. Germain’s turning point. Let’s do this together!

Germain is considering applying as an AFFILIATED CHARTER SCHOOL. In a nut shell this will mean additional school funds as well as increased influence concerning how and what we spend the additional funds on; more information to follow. Please do your part and research about other schools that have affiliated charter status. Ask other parents with students at affiliated charter schools, because the more we know the better! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU parents! The district heard us loud-and-clear. They just called and agreed to reverse their prior decision. Mrs. Hobi will remain in-place with Mrs. Han’s class, until Mrs. Han returns from her leave!

Great work! This is what happens when we work together on behalf of our children.

URGENT message to all Germain Families….

WE NEED ALL PARENTS HELP………

Dear parents:

Many of you are aware that one of our third grade teachers, Mrs. Han, has been on maternity leave. In order to preserve continuity in the classroom, and maximize her students’ learning potential, she invested considerable time and foresight, in collaborating with a highly-qualified long-term substitute. In choosing Mrs. Hobi to temporarily-assume her roll in the classroom, she consciously selected a teacher who has worked full-time at our school (but was displaced due to budget-cuts), one who knows the curriculum, has taught Germain students for many years, and who has a personal investment in our school–and even has a child attending. Most importantly, she has worked this year, in collaboration with Mrs. Han, to assure a seamless transition for the students–one that would not interrupt their learning process.

With just a day’s notice, and roughly six weeks to Mrs. Han’s anticipated return, and just as students begin testing, LAUSD has unilaterally chosen to replace the substitute Mrs. Han chose for her students, with a teacher displaced from another school. With only a few weeks remaining, the district has chosen to override what is obviously in the best interest of the children, with their own bureaucratic interests.

The good news is, Germain families have spoken before, and forced the district to bend to the best interests of our children. We can do it again! But we don’t have much time. Even if your child is not directly affected — YET — please call, and email….

2011 – Halloween – Pumpkin Decorating Contest

This years pumpkin decoration contest was outstanding. Our theme was Storybook Characters. From Humpty Dumpty, The Cat In The Hat, “Jack”, Papa Smurf, and Tinker Bell to Pacman, we had some wonderful characters. Who was your favorite?

Important NEWS- Due to recent budget cuts, Germain Street Elementary School will NOT have a Librarian for the upcoming school year. Because of this, the library cannot be open to students without a teacher present, and students will not be allowed to check-out books under any circumstances. Effectively, this shuts the children out of a valuable educational resource, currently utilized by students on a daily basis. However, it may not be too late. Attached is a pre-written letter for you, or anyone else concerned with your child’s education, to sign and mail to our local district 1 superintendent Linda Del Queto and our LAUSD superintendent Dr. John Deasy.

It would not be the first time Germain St. parents have gotten the district’s attention, and cooperation, when we have demanded it. (It would not even be the first time this year.) If we, the concerned parents, families, and friends of Germain St. students show unified support, we have, and will continue to bring the resources our children need back to the campus. Please take a moment to click the link below, print, complete, and mail 1 copy to each of the addresses below. In addition to correspondence, faxes and calls are valuable as well. All information is provided below. We have done it before. We’ll do it again.

You may attend just the meeting at no cost. Dinner to follow meeting.
